Former Taggers make seamless transition to contact rugby to finish 2nd.

Match Report By Roland Wellington

At the Warm Up festival held at Warlingham RFC on 8th October 2017, the U9’s squad kicked their season off in style. Considering that for some of the team, it was their first few weeks of playing contact rugby, they were a strong and fearless squad.

The first match was against Warlingham White and Streatham-Croydon got straight into the game. Working their way through the opposition and scoring the first two tries of the game. Noah led the defence against Warlingham, together with Aine executing low posture and the ‘Tower of Power’ position to make crucial tackles. A great win to start.

The next match saw the team face Old Whitgiftians 2 and just like the first game, they opened the scoring. Brilliant footwork and ferocious running led to the team scoring comfortable tries throughout the game. Fearless Tyson let loose in this game showing the opposition what he was made of, with Arsenij hot on his heels to support him.
The long break between the next match allowed the team to soak in brief intervals of sun to recharge their batteries.

Streatham-Croydon were back on the rugby pitch with more determination than ever to take on Sevenoaks 2, Mikael led the team onto the scoreboard with the first try of the game and he did not stop there. Barnaby provided brilliant support and was ready at all times retrieving the ball and powering forward.

The team saved the best for last and Horace was on top form with tackle after tackle bringing the Edenbridge players down. Ladon was in hot pursuit and Joshua aka the Falcon was unstoppable once he got hold of the ball, powering straight for the try line. Once again Streatham-Croydon were the first to score and maintained a safe lead until the end of the game.

Well done the entire team, they played fantastic rugby and displayed some excellent skills. This was a great start to the season and what was most rewarding was the comments from the opposition team coaches, who commented on how they loved watching our team play, our team work and superb technique. It is testament to the players’ dedication, love for rugby and coming to have fun.

Well done to the U9 team for coming joint second in the tournament. Thank you to the other coaches - Miranda, Simon and Greg, parents and supporters that came to support our players.
