Champagne Rugby wins the day

Report by Nick Thorp

Under 8s
With a few of the regulars away, the pressure was on for the U8s squad to step up and they did not disappoint. The team gave a mini’s masterclass and kept the spectators entertained with flowing champagne rugby. Rumour had it they won all their games (not that the coaches, players or parents were counting scores, of course!). They were led by length of the field efforts from Charlie “Gasman” Gaukrodger and Rolando “Wizard” Wellington which left the opposition defence in tatters.
Backed up by the energy of Harriet “What’s the score” Thorp and Milo “I’m everywhere” Galic, and held together by the defensive glue of Matilda “Little general” Zaltzman their reputation spread quickly. Even when the opposition looked at the side-lines there was no respite, with Laydon “Super-Sub” Larkin-Weir and late arrival Noah “Afterburner” Burnett itching to get their hands on the ball.
In the end, rumour turned to legend, and it proved to be too much for the opposition for the final game, who left for home early rather than face the might of the Streatham U8 machine.

Under 7s
The under 7s went into the tournament as a bit of an unknown quantity, and it was great to see some future leaders stepping up. Magnus “Streatham express” Wright put in his best performance of the year, while Mike Brown impressions from Horace “Points machine” Zaltzman and efforts from George “Side to side” Thorp and kept the opposition guessing.
Some early defensive hiccups were sorted out once we realised heavy-duty gloves didn’t help with the tagging, and as the games wore on, Lennie “Galloping” Galic took the chance to show his style and a scintillating try from Scylla “the Speed” Larkin-Weir, along with constant support from Tiyana “the Future” Wellington rounded off a very successful day for the team.

Congratulations to the players for entertaining us with their energy, effort, and sportsmanship, and to the parents and supporters who made sure everyone went home fed, watered and happy.

PS - Special mention to Miranda Zaltzman for getting the tent set up in under a minute, and extra special mention to Roland Wellington, who organised getting it down and in the case in under two minutes. Rumour has it that’s an improvement of over half an hour from previous efforts!
