Wombled but much gained from a narrow defeat

Arriving at Wimbledon RFC’s ground at Barham Road on a bright but fresh morning and sporting their new strip, the u12/13 squad were looking to play their first game of the month. And it started so well with tries coming from Samuel Kabia and Nathaniel Cameron in the first 10 minutes. Looking fully in control, two momentary lapses in concentration allowed Wimbledon back into the game and by half time, it was all square at 10-10.
Playing downhill in the second half, the hope was that the team would take the game by the scruff of the next but instead of playing to our strengths of getting the ball out wide and using our speedy wingers, we began to run into traffic in the middle of the pitch. In contrast, Wimbledon started to play an expansive game and pulled away with three unanswered tries.
However, the team refused to give up and started to pressurise Wimbledon’s try line. Andy Aheto went close as did Jamal Reid but both were held up over the line. Then Samuel powered through with two more tries and suddenly the score was 25-20 with 3 minutes to go. And despite the onslaught that is how the score remained. A narrow defeat for the team but many positives can be taken from the performance, which will stand them in good stead for next week’s game against KCS.
