5 up for the boys in Maroon!

"The more we sweat in peace the less we bleed in war."
William Shakespeare, All's Well That Ends Well

Playing a game of rugby on Remembrance Sunday always holds a special significance. It is a humbling experience watching our young players hold a minutes silence to remember those who fought and died in the two World Wars and subsequent conflicts so that we can play the game we love, to sweat on the field of play, yet shake hands in peace and friendship after the game in safety.

Playing at home for the first time this season in their 3rd round-robin competition against KCS Old Boys , the u12/13 squad sought to build on the narrow loss suffered at the hands of Wimbledon RFC just 7 days ago.

Kicking off at 11:02am, the game started with commitment from both sides.
After 9 minutes of play and with KCS gaining the upper hand, SCRFC were under pressure on their 5m line until an KCS infringement gave away a penalty. Using Andy Aheto as the first receiver from their own tryline, Andy barged through the defence taking 3-4 defenders with him. Having broken free from them, he ran the entire length of the field and scored the opening try. 5-0
Five minutes later Daniel Ivanov, playing scrum half in place of under weather Joseph Gallon finished off a well worked try despite being tackled by two defenders. 10-0. With two minutes of the first half remaining Sam Kabia powered through the centre of the field to score the teams’ third try of the half. 15-0

After a half time chat, KCS came out seeking to turn the game around and were good value for their two tries in 10 minutes. 15-10
However, whereas SCRFC would normally have lost focus, they upped their game, began defending resolutely again and stopped KCS from gaining any more momentum. As SCRFC marched up the field, a series of passes down the line allowed Diran Oresanya to take the ball from 20m out. He ran straight and hard, throwing an exquisite dummy to trick two KCS defenders to score the fourth try. 20-10.
With a minute to go, KCS started to ply on the pressure in search of a consolatory third try, but all hopes were dashed when a lovely offload to Jamal Reid on the wing allowed him to sprint 40m and score into the corner. Final score 25-10.

A great team performance and a special mentions must go to Ciaran Davies and Finley McDermott who joined KCS in the final minutes of the game to ensure that the squads were even.
