The U12s Cup game in the Chairman’s Plate Competition against Guildford U12B nearly did not take place. The downpour during the night cancelled a number of games across the County, but our grounds held up well and was playable. So the hope was that the boys would perform to their ability.
Whilst the weather behaved itself and the sun shone, a needless self-inflicted injury 10 minutes before kick-off ruled one of the boys out of the game meaning the team had to be hastily reorganised.
This upset the team tactics and we were two tries to nil behind after 10 Minutes. However, they settled and played good running rugby and although Andrew Aheto was held up on the line, Diran Oresanya, a few phases later intercepted a pass as Guildford tried to clear their lines and scored a poachers try.
Just before half time, Guildford broke from deep in their half and scored another try to restore a two try lead.
Despite a change in tactics at half time, Guildford scored two unanswered tries to take a commanding lead 10 minutes into the second half. And then the boys kicked into gear. First Daniel Ivanov received the ball from a quick tap penalty, darted round the blind side to score in the corner. Then Andrew Aheto scored a try despite having 4 Guildford players trying to drag him down.
All to no avail as in the dying minutes of the game, Guildford put out any hope of a comeback with two quick tries.
Guildford were worthy of the win and Streatham are left pondering what could have been.
