Having won the cup in this category last season, the U13s made a statement of intent by putting Barnes U13Bs to the sword early on in the game. The tie was decided as the team scored 5 unanswered tries in the first 17mins. The forwards controlled the game and Diran scored within 2 minutes. Finlay followed up with a 30m run to score. Ryan playing on the wing due to injuries in the squad, had a man of the match performance with the first of his hat-trick as the ball was elegantly passed down the line for him to score in the corner. EJ and Fergus scored the next couple of tries before Barnes finally scored their first try. 25-5 at half time
The second half was a tighter affair as the team seemed to take their feet off the pedal and Barnes stepped up. This was evidenced by the fact that Barnes drew the second half.
James nearly scored a wonderful interception but was judged to be in an offside position.
It was a see-saw second half that saw Barnes score first. It took another 10 minutes of pressure before Andi powered through from a penalty 5m from Barnes' try line. Loose tackling let Barnes back into the game. Good invention from the team saw a scrum won on the half way line and following some fantastic passing and support play, Ryan scored again to put the match beyond Barnes. In the final minutes as both teams tired, defences weakened and both teams scored.
Final score 20-35.
Onto Round 2.
