In memory of Verne-Bruce Sylvester

Femi Oresanya

Remembering Verne: Teacher, coach, clubman and friend.

Streatham-Croydon RFC is saddened to announce the passing on Thursday 20th August 2026 of our dear friend Verne-Bruce Sylvester.
A vice-president, former player, current youth coach, long-serving committee member and stalwart of the Club for nearly 30 years, Verne was also a leading figure in the rugby community in his native Trinidad and Tobago. A dedicated and admired teacher, most recently at John Fisher School in Purley, he taught and mentored countless young people across Croydon and beyond through his work at Woodcote High, Harris Girls Academy, Thomas More and Oxted School.
His loss will be deeply felt by everyone at the Club and across the wider rugby community, and our thoughts are with his family at this very sad time.
The clubhouse will be open from 1pm on Saturday 22nd August as his beloved All Blacks play South Africa, giving Verne’s friends the opportunity to gather and raise a toast to his memory.
