Back-to-back wins move Streatham-Croydon to 5th in the league, reports Ben Cowl

It was a good win for the boys this weekend. We really need to keep up the momentum over the next few games to solidify our position for this season.
- Barney Barnes, Club Captain

Despite the mixed weather preventing the arrival of spring, the men's 1st XV have managed to complete two league fixtures in March. On the 10th March, in a lull in the poor weather, SCRFC faced Old Paulines in fine conditions away from home. Paulines, sitting at the bottom of the table, were keen to provide an upset against Streatham who sat at 7th. The deadlock was broken early on as fly-half Kai Cassemis provided a perfect miss pass to allow rookie fullback Ben Cowl an easy run in. Streatham’s ill-discipline cost them throughout the game, as Paulines converted 3 penalties to make the score 5-9. Two unconverted tries from Streatham’s Dan Witter and Kai Cassemis put Streatham in a comfortable position going into the last 10 minutes. This comfort was shattered as Paulines scored a late try to make the score 14-15, however they failed to convert the try and the game finished 14-15. Streatham pull a Houdini and escape with a win to stay at 7th position.

On 17th March, with a return to the arctic conditions, as England faced their challengers Ireland on the national stage, Streatham-Croydon faced down Bec Old Boys at Frant Road in a snowy blizzard. This was an important game for both sides as they had everything to play for, Streatham had seen a drop in form and sat in 7th and Bec Old Boys were in a relegation dogfight starting the game in 8th. Streatham’s wide players showed their finishing ability from early on with first blood being drawn from Ibrahim Campbell; Ibrahim is certainly a player to watch after breaking into the first team from the juniors.

With assertive scrummaging from the SCRFC pack they were able to provide a good platform for the backs. The dominance in the set piece was underlined by a man of the match performance by Will Ballentine, who commanded the line out. Tries then followed from Dan Witter and Rolstone David Langmead. Bec Old Boys had moments of quality, however, they failed to convert their opportunities and the game finished Streatham-Croydon 38 Bec Old Boys 0, moving Streatham up to 5th in the table.

The men's 1st XV have 3 more league games left in the season, and wins could secure a comfortable mid table finish.
