As the
2020 6 nations kicked off on 1st February, an even more important competition started a day later.
The u15s Quins Cup!
In a tough pool of Dorking, Cobham and Old Wimbledon Warriors, winning the pool would be a big ask. Yet, the boys came so close to snatching a famous win against Dorking in the first game.
In a physically bruising encounter, both sides played fantastic rugby. Despite going 5-0 down after only 3 mins on the clock, the boys fought their way back into the game to scoring after 19mins. A short line out move on Dorking’s 5m led to the ball being recycled to Sam to force his way over the line. 5-5.
Good defending from both sides showed how evenly matched they were. Dorking passed the ball out wide and scored a critical try as the end of the first half approached to go into the break 10-5 up.
With a slight tail wind in the second half Streatham-Croydon plied on the pressure but a combination of missed opportunities, final passes going awry and Dorking’s superb defending kept the boys at bay. Then against the run of play, from breaking out of their 22 with a massive kick, Dorking combined well to score and convert. 17-5.
Many teams would have buckled but from a quick restart, the boys drove to the line and Sam finished off a great move. 17-10.
It seemed that the boys had found a burst of energy and quickly scored a third try to make it a 2-point game. Jaden powered over the line. 17-15. As the clock wound down, both sides kept the pressure on.
Then in the dying minutes Dorking won a penalty and from the resulting line out scored the final try to complete a narrow win for Dorking.
An absorbing game and the squad should be proud of their performance despite the result. Dorking’s head Coach complimented the squad by telling me that our boys the hardest and most physical side that they had ever played. Roll Cobham at home next Sunday.
