Streatham-Croydon continued their promising start to the season when a much changed side overcame old rivals Met Police at their Thornton Heath home.
With many of the players who had featured in the two season opening cup games attending Rugby World Cup matches a Streatham side featuring 6 players making their season debut put together a strong performance. Inevitably with so many new combinations Streatham were unable to produce their usual flowing game but relied on a strong defensive performance and were always dangerous when launching rapid counter attacks. The first score came after a period of sustained pressure from the Police when Mike Parker won a turnover and a sharp break through the centre by Nick Ogbonna put winger Williams in under the posts for skipper Cassemis to convert.
After 20 minutes prop Kowalski, recently returned from a long term injury, made an immediate impact with Streatham driving the Police pack back in the scrums and form once such drive fly half Harry Peddle was able to pressurise the opposing fly half into an error and fly hack the ball half the length of t pitch to touch down. A superb touchline conversion form Cassemis making it 14-0. The Met responded strongly and were able to get 5 points back when repeated attacks put their winger over out wide but Strets responded well and a series of attacks put Captain Kai in under the posts with the conversion making it 21-5. The last play of the half saw the Met kick 3 points from a Streatham error making the score 21-8 at half time.
The second half followed a similar pattern to the first with Streatham's composed defence sustaining pressure and managing to contain the numerous Police attacks with the Frant Road outfit still looking dangerous on the counter attack but they were unable to convert any of the opportunities that came their way so the highlight was very much the defensive performance with Jack Peddle, Ben Reeve and Toby Finlayson all putting in strong performances. The Met managed a late score to bring the score back to 21-13 a full time.
Streatham Head Coach Bob Dickinson will be very pleased that the players on show yesterday performed so ably and it clearly demonstrates that Streatham have a significant pool of players with the ability to perform at this level.
Next Week Streatham face Merton in another League fixture again at home with a 2pm kick off.
