Streatham Maintain Winning Run

Bonus Point win but erratic performance

Following the historic first ever Streatham-Croydon ladies match at Frant Road on Saturday the 1st XV were able to continue their winning ways.

A dogged Mitcham & Carshalton side put in a performance that belied their lowly League position and made life difficult for the Thornton Heath side throughout. Streatham went into the game with a number of changes due to unavailability and injury and suffered additional injuries to Back row Jordan Bradley and No8 Garth Biggins that will leave them out of action for several weeks.

Streatham were able to put Mitcham under early pressure and a strong runs from both Bryan and Grant were both stopped short before fly half Harry Peddle was able to dummy the defence on the 25 metre line to go over for a score he converted himself to put Streatham 7-0 up.

From the restart Streatham again worked their way into the Mitcham half for a period of constant pressure but seemed unable to apply the finishing touch to several clear-cut scoring chances and it wasn't until they managed to get the ball into the hands of flying winger Auguiste just before half time that they were able to add to the score with a superb touchline conversion from Peddle making it 14-0 at halftime.

The second half started with Streatham conceding a series of penalties that enabled Mitcham to keep the pressure on the home sides line and eventually resulted in a unconverted score for the visitors but Streatham responded when a loose kick was collected by skipper Cassemis who beat several defenders to score 19-5. Streatham then again seemed to get the ire of the referee and a series of penalties saw Mitcham score from a catch and drive to make it 19-12.

This finally seemed to spark some life into the South London outfit and they finally took control of the match in the last ten minutes. Firstly another strong run form Captain Kai saw a score directly under the posts and then a fine flowing attack passing through several pairs of hands saw 2nd row Jonnie Korcz score to make it 31-12 at the finish

Streatham, who now sit 2nd in the League, will know that they will need to be more dynamic and ruthless if they are to challenge for promotion and maintain pressure on League Leaders Weybridge. The 2nd XV again suffered with the last minute withdrawal of the opposition and the 3rd XV gained a creditable 12-12 draw at Suttonians. The 1st XV now have a rest week prior to the visit to Old Rutlishians on the 24th October
