Streats drop to second place

Streatham suffered their first defeat of the season on a windy day in Weybridge. The Frant Road side were forced to make several last minute changes following several injuries whilst Reeds did them the compliment of playing all of their Harlequins Academy squad members and calling back a number of players from University.

The match, which kicked off ten minutes late due to the late arrival of the referee, started disastrously for Streatham when the ball was not gathered and a Reeds player chased well top touch down for 5 points. This summed up the first 30 minutes of the match Streatham would run and number of phases and plays and work themselves into a good position only for mistakes to be made. Indeed in the first half Streatham made more errors than have been made all season and Reeds had the ability to capitalise and played the conditions well using the advantage of the wind and slope and knowledge of the pitch. This meant they worked up a 24-0 lead before Vinnie Auguiste was worked into some space to score and make it 24-5. From the restart Streatham pressed again but a breakaway form deep in the Reeds 22 saw another score to make it 29-5 at half time.

Although Streatham had the slope in the second half the wind dropped considerably to nullify the advantage. Streatham started with lots of pressure on the Reeds line but another mistake saw the Weybridge side break out to make it 34-5. Streatham then finally managed to mount some consistent pressure and scored two converted tries by Tim Perry and Tom O'Neill to bring the score back to 34-19. Playing with more confidence following these scores Streatham pushed to add further to their points tally and with 20 minutes left were piling on pressure on the Reeds a theme that was to continue more or less until the final whistle line but playing in almost complete darkness Reeds were able to poach two late interception tries to make the final score 48-19.

Streatham will feel that they were unable to do themselves justice in this fixture and will be eagerly anticipating the return match in March but now need to refocus on the final League game prior to the Christmas break away at Merton next Saturday.

The Scorpions meanwhile were able to record and excellent win 37-0 against Woking at home to maintain first place in the League and face their own crunch match against Guildfordians at home next Saturday and the Serpents picked up the league points when Haslemere cried off.
