Streatham bounced back from last weeks first loss of the season with a workmanlike performance at Merton.
The Frant Road side featured a much changed back division as a result of the numerous injuries suffered in the last few weeks with Ex skipper Chris Geary returning at fly half and a new centre partnership of josh smith and Jake Doherty. A strong start was punctuated by too many mistakes as Streatham took time to adjust to the changes and despite playing most of the half in Merton territory it wasn't until 2o minutes into the match that Jake Doherty was able to finish of a multi-phase passage of play with the first score. Merton made a rare foray into the Streatham half and were rewarded with a penalty before Geary went over following another long period of pressure to make the half time score 10-3.
At halftime Coach Bob Dickinson stressed the need to use the width of the field and reduce the error count and it resulted in a big improvement in the performance for the second 40 minute period. Firstly skipper Kai Cassemis score a try which he converted himself following a break on halfway by the narcissistic Josh Smith who had a fine match constantly beating defenders before two flowing backs movements put winger Elvin Grant into space for a brace of scores followed by Smith going over himself following a barrelling run that left numerous defenders in his wake to make the score 34-3. Merton were not giving up however and managed to get 5 points back before vice skipper Jack Peddle supported well to get on the end of another flowing move. The last ten minutes saw Streatham completely dominant and running the ball from everywhere leading to tries for Vinnie Auguiste and a third for Grant before the evergreen Gordon Holder was able to go over following another strong run to make the final score 58-8. With all of the four sides in Surrey 3 recording victories Streatham remain in second place as they now go into the winter break until the next match on 16th January at home to Reigate.
In a good day for Thornton Heath side the 2nd XV, the Scorpions, remained in first place in the Reserve league with a 19-0 win over Guildfordians whilst the thought facing the formidable 'Abduls Army' the 3rd XV Serpents was too much for Reeds Weybridge who cried off of the fixture.
