Streatham played their first League fixture of 2016 against a rejuvenated Reigate side much changed from the side beaten earlier in the season. The bulky Reigate forwards aimed to play a very tight game and the Thornton Heath side were only able to sporadically play their high tempo game on a heavy pitch
Streatham started spectacularly when a scrum won against the head resulted in quick ball being moved wide to Elvin Grant who was able to power over in the corner to make it 5-0. From the restart some more incisive running should of lead to further scores but the rustiness of the long Christmas layoff seemed to cause several final passes to go to ground. This gave Reigate confidence and following a long series of forward drives they were able to score to make it 5 apiece. It wasn't until Man of the Match Barney Barnes was able to brush aside numerous tacklers later in the half that Streatham were able to take the lead again with the conversion by Cassemis making it 12-5 at half time.
The second half started with a similar series of Streatham mistakes and some determined defence from Reigate and it took a fine turnover from Barnes and some deft handling from the backs to result in fly half Gallagher to make it 17-5. Streatham we finally now playing some flowing rugby and a good break form Cassemis was continued by winger Auguiste who put hooker Alsop in the clear to score under the posts to make the final score 24-5
Streatham will be pleased with the bonus point win but will know they will have to improve considerably to maintain their challenge for promotion starting with a difficult away match against local rival Mitcham next Saturday
With the 2nd team opponents Old Freemans conceding a walkover the only other side in action was the Serpents who maintained their recent run of good form with an away win against Reigate 2nd XV 15-7. Saturday.
