Streatham win again

Streatham-Croydon bounce back from another poor start to beat local rivals Mitcham 46-12

Streatham are developing a habit of starting slowly and on the churned pitch of Poulter park home to Mitcham and Carshalton RFC, this week was no different. Mitcham had failed to put a team out for their previous fixture so it was with some relief that Streatham arrived to find a full opposition, even if it was the bare minimum 15 men.

Streatham's slow start saw them 12-0 down with 20 minutes gone, some good pressure from Mitcham and some terrible handling from the visitors got the spectators thinking they could be watching an upset. Fortunately after Mitcham's second score the visitors woke up, Winger Elvin Grant with one of his trade mark bullish runs going in at the corner. It was all that was needed to get the Streatham side fired up. Following the score the game was never in doubt, Streatham started retaining the ball allowing them to unleash their back row at the Mitcham defence again and again, it wasn't long before the large Mitcham pack were run off their feet. With the defence waining scrum half Kai Cassemis put a lovely weighted chip behind them and fly half Geary was quickly through to gather and go over. 10 minutes later and it was a second try for Grant and Streatham were flying. Mitcham were finding it tough and with no substitutes would be down to 13 men by the end of the match.

Streatham scored again almost immediately after the interval, second row Josh Smith with the score after some great running, Smith wouldn't be the last forward to score, with Number 8 Barney Barnes, Prop Tom O'Neil and Flanker Jack Peddle all getting on the score sheet. There was also a score for substitute Micheal Phillips on the wing.

It's a mark of this team that after a 12- 46 win, disappointment filled the dressing room after the game, Streatham know that if they are going to get promoted this season they will have to find a way to play a full 80 minutes but they will take heart from a much improved scrum and the knowledge that they haven't yet put together the performance they know they are capable.

Streatham are at home this Saturday (30th January) when they take on Old Rutlishians at Frant Rd. Kick off 2.15pm
