Streatham's 1st XV finished their season with an emphatic victory to win Surrey 3 and gain promotion.
With the weather producing a lovely sunny spring afternoon conditions were perfect for Stret's fast paced game. It was the Met however who started the stronger with the Thornton Heath side conceding a series of penalties and the Police right wing went over after a series of driving mauls to lead 5-0. Streatham responded immediately and as soon as some quick ball was delivered to the backs Harry Clarke was able to smash his way up the middle to offload to Ali Kilham who scored under the posts with Ed Williams converting 5-7. From the restart the dangerous Kilham made a strong break but the tackle resulted in an injury and he was replaced by Elvin Grant. Streatham built pressure again and from a series of pick and go's Josh Smith powered over to make it 5-12. Met however had not read the script at this stage and attacked strongly to get a penalty to make it 8-12. Stret's were now fully in their stride and some slick passing put Grant in space to score followed by another barreling run by Harry Clarke who also crossed the line to earn the bonus point and make the halftime score 8-28.
The 2nd half saw the Frant Road side in full flow and look dangerous whenever they had ball in hand despite determined Met defence. First Ed Williams went over followed by a second for Harry Clarke before Elvin Grant was able to run in two further tries to make his tally 3 for the day. Finally Liam Gallagher added the final score to make it 8-58.
Streatham-Croydon are deserving champions and have been able led by skipper Kai Cassemis and Vice Captain ably supported by Team Manager Dave Waller but Bob Dickinson, Trevor Young and the rest of the coaching team should take great credit in the way the 3 senior men's sides have developed this season with the 2nd XV winning their League and the 3rd XV pushing strongly in theirs. The focus is already moving on to next season with the club looking to develop its playing strength and numbers and pre-season session will be starting in May. Anyone interested in joining a vibrant growing club can make contact via the website or contact Bob Dickinson direct on 07970 161864.
The focus now shifts to the Ladies XV who will be playing their Cup Semi Final at home to Beckenham on Sunday 10th April at 1pm when a big crowd is expected as Streatham push for more silverware.
