Streatham Win

Fantastic comeback by the 1st XV

Streatham-Croydon recover from a terrible start to overcome a strong Economicals side at Frant Road.

With a number of changes due to injury and unavailability a much changed Streatham side took to the field. From the kick off the dangerous Economicals backs were able to create some space and went in under the posts. Streatham responded with some pressure in the oppositions 22 but turnover ball enabled Economicals to again set free their strong running backs to make the score 0-12. Despite Liam Gallagher's well taken try Streatham continued to make too many errors resulting in two more tries for the New Malden based side to put Stret's 5-26 down and seemingly out of the match. Man of the match Robbie McNaugher then powered over before both sides traded penalties to make the Halftime score 15-29.

As the Streatham faithful headed to the bar for badly needed sustenance coaches Bob Dickinson and Trevor Young took the home side into the changing room to deliver a 'forthright' view of the first half performance. The Thornton heath side emerged for the second half seemingly a different team with Economicals on the defensive for the remainder of the match and the home side strongly encouraged by skipper Kai Cassemis and the refreshed crowd.

The Streatham scrum was now well on top and from a turnover the ball was worked blind for Winger Dan Witter to make his first score for the 1st XV before centre Harry Clark pounced on a loose ball to make if 25-29. Streatham then camped in the Economicals 22 and the constant pressure eventually told with Lewis Weston crashing over for a score which he also converted and finally Streatham were ahead. From the restart Streatham took clean ball and again worked their way down field for Clark to add another score again converted by Weston to make the final score 39-29.

Streatham will know that to compete in this League they cannot afford a start like this again especially next week when they travel to League leaders Old Blues in Motspur Park but they will be buoyed by the character they were able to show to turn this match around.

The 2nd XV continued their strong start to the season with a win at Local rivals Old Whitgiftians 24-8 whilst the 3rd XV came out second best in a topsy-turvy tussle with Sutton and Epsom 12-21
