Injury hit Streatham sneak win

In a hard fought contest at Frant Rd, SCRFC pip Worth Old Boys 12-10 to snatch the win

It will not go down in history as one of the greatest games played at Frant Rd. Streatham-Croydon beset with injuries, fielded a mix of 1st team and 2nd team players against second from bottom Worth Old Boys. Worth have found it hard to find their rhythm this season and with a mixed Streatham team the game was never going to be a classic but those that may have been 2nd team players this morning, end the day as winning 1st team players for one of the oldest clubs in the world and that can never be taken away from them.

Both teams were very even in the loose with Streatham having an advantage in the Scrums, which over the course of the game may have been the only difference between the two sides. We won't give a blow by blow account, as the entire game was a case of both teams running through phases until a mistake or turn over and making very little ground, then the other team doing very much the same. There were glimpses of the Streatham we know with breaks from Smith and Maytom but they come to nothing, although Smith's best run of the game did see him brought down an inch for the try line, much to the frustration of the Frant Rd faithful. Mentions should also go to Max Thomason, who has gone from 2nd team regular to 1st team starter on merit and had another strong game in the tight and loose. Back row Jack Robert was extremely busy in defence and made a huge amount of tackles to keep the Worth back line at bay and Man of the Match Lewis Weston continues to be a real annoyance to all teams Streatham face this season. Following an early 5 points for Worth, it was second team regular Phil Maytom who at the start of the last quarter finally scored the try that lead to the Streatham win.

It is a testament to the Thornton Heath side that they can still field a competitive 1st team with over 30 players unavailable this week for various reasons and with these players becoming available again over the next month things can only improve and not before time, as Streatham travel to second place Old Walcountians for the last league game of the year on the the 10th of December.

Todays Game was sponsored by Vic McCarthy, in memory of his son and former SCRFC 1st team player Chris who will forever be missed by his team mates.

SCRFC Women: The Salamanders, look to continue their amazing run of results tomorrow (27th of Nov) when they take on St Francis at Frant Rd 2.30pm KO
