Strets fall short against Old Glyns

Written by Mo

With Eddie Jones’ England smashing his old side. Would we have a grass roots repeat with Matt Hawkes against his old school. With the skill level, numbers and effort forever increasing at training, surely a win was on the cards for Streatham.
From the start Captain Barney Barnes took in on himself to inject some New Zealand flair into the game, with an out the back offload. Unfortunately, this didn’t work for our clubs Sonny Bill, instead the ball ended up out in touch. The consequential Glyn lineout, set out their game plan for the rest of the game, bringing the ball down quickly and using the strength of their forwards in a relentless driving maul. The rolling maul was clearly a well-rehearsed favourite of Old Glyn.
A few phases later and Will and Beynon putting in some big hits, earning the knock on. With the ball yoyoing between Streatham and Glyn possession it was difficult for the very slightly intoxicated supporters to keep track.
With Streatham pinned in their 22, former-prop Charlie Pattihis took it upon himself to marshal the defensive line, with his voice bellowing “HUNT, HUNT, HUNT!” resonating across the pitch and through the stands.
With ball back in possession aerial attacks were attempted from Streatham, but with the great positional play of the Glyn full back he launched counter-attacks off these with ease.
Streatham releasing Westy at the half-way who zig zagged and stepped his way into the opposition 22, offloading to Charlie who released Harry Peddle into the corner for the first try of the match. The conversion attempt from Peddle drifting just wide. 5-0 Streatham.
From kick-off Glyn imposing themselves on full-back Peddle with the clearance kick charged down, ball carried over by Streatham. Streatham winning the ball back and taking it up to half way, only for the hard work to be undone and a penalty given for holding on. Glyn kicking to the corner and making best use of the rolling maul to get back a try. Glyn edging just in front with the successful conversion. 5-7 with 20 minutes gone.
Phil putting in a huge hit and winning the ball back for Streatham, Barney smashing it up through the centres but then Glyn getting good man over ball winning the penalty. Luckily the lineout not straight and Beynon running a good line, with a penalty won after good phase play from Streatham.
Successfully winning the lineout but then for the clearance kick to go straight out, just outside the 22, Glyn back in possession of the ball. With Glyn running hard lines, Craig decides to give good levels of chat and smash a man without the ball, unfortunately he does so in front of the ref, Glyn penalty.
Glyn take the penalty quickly and after 2 phases the Glyn centre runs through 2 missed tackles. 14-5 to Glyn. Charlie Pattihis claiming injury, though seemed to be walking limp-free and sprucely later that evening, Rolstone moves to the centres to be paired with Barney and Dan Murley in at hook.
From kick-off Beynon manages to recover the ball, however a few phases later and Glyn attacking the Streatham 22. A high tackle penalty given, and Glyn decide to not back themselves, opting for points, 17-5.
Going into half time a closable margin with 2 tries in it.
Glyn starting the second half strongly making full use of the rolling maul, pushing up to the Streatham 5 metre line. Streatham defence holding strong for a period. Westy off injured.
With our own George North (Freddy) offended by two players off injured, he decides to back himself for the concussion, though decide to man up and continues to play.
Glyn earning a lineout just outside the 22, making full effect of the rolling maul and swinging out to their centres. 24-5.
Strong words from the captain and attempts at getting the boys pumped up. Phil attempting to run it straight with his bodybuilder build only to be pummelled backwards, Rolstone and Barney making good yardage and pushing Streatham into the Glyn 22 for the first time in a while. Some phase play later and the Streatham efforts are rewarded with a penalty try. 24-12. The comeback is on.
Glyn running the ball through good phase play 31-12.
With a few minutes left on the clock Streatham earn a penalty in the Glyn 22 and opt for the scrum, the scum works well, and a backs ball is used to good affect with Patrick scoring in the corner. Conversion scored by Peddle 31-19.
Streatham showed skill and good defence for the most part, but aggression, maul defence and the kicking game are areas we can improve on. Hopefully next week will be the first win against Old Paul’s.
