Despite the early meet to hop on Bob Dean's Spectacular Fun Bus for a 1hr plus journey to Haslemere in deepest darkest Surrey, the players were excited to get the game underway. Some new faces in unfamiliar positions promised to be an intriguing set up for game 7 of Surrey 4, 21/22.
After only a couple of life threatening scares courtesy of the Fun Bus aficionado and club president Bob "Danger" Dean (thanks again Bob...), the team jumped off the bus and into the changing room where the team physio Nat was kept busy by a growing list of players who are becoming mainly tape. With a few usual players missing, it was a great opportunity to try some players in different positions and for some players to put their hands up for continued selection. Having player/coach Jesse Mackewn dusting off the boots to take his place on the bench is always a sight to behold.
Strets started well. After a ferocious start from the strets boys, inspirational and intimidatingly good looking captain Freddy Green crashed over to score the games first points. Jack Kelleway, starting today at 10, stepped up and slotted the extras. A purely dominant pack at scrum time provided the aforementioned skipper his second try of the day (and probably easiest he'll ever score), by walking the Haslemere pack back 10 metres over the whitewash. Freddy also showcased an under utilised part of his game, with a perfectly weighted, delicate chip through which nearly resulted in a try for Jonny Orritt. So close.
Perhaps it was overconfidence, or maybe complacency, but the Strets team took their foot off the gas shortly afterwards, and allowed Haslemere to score at the other end after some nice passing. However some stern words from the streatham leadership group soon whipped the boys back into action.
The evergreen Liam Gallagher, playing in his first game of the season, displayed some classy running lines and dotted down after being sent through by former prop Charlie Pattihis. VC Charlie went on to claim a few more assists during the game, however couldn't add to his growing total. Always the bridesmaid, Charlie.
Adam "Barney" Barnes played in his customary physical way as he slotted in at outside centre, to create a rather hefty 10, 12 and 13 group. Barney displayed some hard running and burst through the Haslemere line for another try. He would follow this up shortly after with another, to cap a typical barndoor performance which also featured some huge hits.
Unfortunately, the hits Barney showcased proved to be far and few between for the rest of the Strets team with some uncharacteristically lackadaisical tackling, which resulted in another try conceded to the opposition. Some furious words said under the posts, with the boys determined to make that next hit count. Big Willy B perhaps took this a tad too far as he nearly decapitated an opposition player straight from the kick-off. The yellow card duly followed, with little protestation from the strets team. Ten minute breather for the Big Willy B.
However this did not affect the rest of the game, with two further tries for Liam Gallagher completing his hatrick. Jack Everton also touched down, before turning provider by identifying some space on the blind side and sending Dave Tonks through who finished smartly. Ibby Campbell, who admirably stepped up even though he was carrying a knock, also added to his tally by running around the Haslemere winger even at 60%. Jack Kelleway stepped up with a good conversion rate, slotting 7 of his 10 attempts.
Thanks to the Haslemere boys for making us feel welcome whilst watching the end of the Ireland NZ game (which Irish Robb somewhat enjoyed). Back on the Fun Bus, beers flowed to make the long journey fly by. With some tough games coming up before the mid-season break, Strets will not be using the bye week to take it easy. Back to Frant road to train hard and get preparation right. Lets go Strets!
