During the week building up to game 6 of Surrey 4 for Streatham at Frant Road, the focus was on the unpredictability of an Old Hamptonians side who have had a strong season so far. After the buoying win against Harlequin Amateurs the week before, the team knew that every game had to be approached with the same mentality, by holding ourselves to our own standards.
Old Hamptonians, missing a fair amount of usual starters, featured a young backline with a lot of players straight out of uni. This proved to be a new challenge for the Strets team, by having to deal with some youthful energy and genuine pace in the opposition backs. Buoyed by a great support from the home faithful, Strets started well with a now characteristically intense opening 10 minute period. The pressure finally punctured the OH defence, and Rolstone Langmead darted over for the games opening try. He then continued this try scoring form by going through a hole, being found with a beautifully weighted pass from 10 Adam Sheehy.
OH then had their turn to control possession mid-way through the first half. The Strets pack dominated at scrum time, however to OHs credit, they got the ball out quickly to involve their speedy backs. Defensive organisation was tip top thanks to former prop Charlie Pattihis marshalling our backline, and we managed to put up a strong defensive line. Unfortunately Ben Cowell, otherwise excellent in this game, had a heads gone moment and tried to throw a 30 yard pass after taking the ball at full back, which was intercepted for OHs first score of the game. DoD sorted early in this game.
However, the Strets team knew that if they played the system that they have been working on all system and control possession of the ball, then the victory would be theirs. This was indeed the case, with more tries coming before the end of the half. Former prop and VC Charlie Pattihis powered his way over the line, before being joined on the try scorers list by Jack Everton (continuing his fine form at 9) and Michael Parker. Jayson Edwards also scored after collecting the ball at a lineout, definitely not knocking it on, and dotting down over the whitewash. They all count Jase.
The second half continued in the way of the first, with Strets continuing their stranglehold of the game. Jack Everton scored his second of the game, as did Michael Parker when he found his way off the wing. Whilst OH scored again in the second half, the final say of the game was a try for Rolstone Langmead who completed his hatrick taking a lovely offload from the always impressive James Beynon. Adam Sheehy continued his accurate form with the boot, by completing 7 conversions out of 9 attempts.
The home faithful enjoyed the expressive rugby shown by the Strets side, with some really intelligent, heads up rugby on show. This season is proving to be a special one. Get down and get involved.
Man of the Match - Rolstone Langmead, the guy got a hatrick...
DoD - Ben Cowell, as previously mentioned
Man of Steel - Adam Sheehy for setting the tone with a huge bosh early in the game
