On a day when the club remembered Minis & Junior Chairman Chris McCarthy, Streatham took the field to pay their respects. The day started well with some very early pressure in defence allowing Streatham so good field position. A well worked move from a lineout saw Kai Cassemis break the line and so very neat draw and pass move put through first Michael James Parker and then Opeyemi Odelusi who went under the post for the first score just 5 minutes into the game. The conversion bounced back off the cross bar.
And then came a period where the Met Police found some rhythm and started to get into the game. Over enthusiasm by Opeyemi Odelusi from a Met Police tap and go, saw him yellow carded for a professional foul. And that's when the game began to change. Met Police constantly started to find space out wide as Streatham got caught defending to narrow. Eventually the space told and in quick succession the Met police went over in the corner to take the lead just before half time 10 points to 5.
And then disaster struck for Streatham and the first lost Prop Max Thomason, Winger Jordan Staples and then Outside Centre Jake Doherty to injury just before the end of the half. On the plus side the substitutions saw the return of Daniel Birchmore who had been injured since the Away game against Met Police back in early October and also the return of club stalwart Owen Howells making his first appearance under the new regime.
The second half became a curios affair, Streatham spending longs periods in their half giving the appearance that the Met were on top, which was actually far from the case. The problem being that at the majority of the set pieces Streatham would win the ball but then give away possession either by spilling the ball in contact or giving away cheap penalties. And then the tide changed when Streatham won a free kick on their own five metre line. And up stepped Elvin Grant who received the tap pass and promptly beat 6 players down the 5 metre channel to score in the corner.
From the kick off disaster struck as when spinning the ball wide close to their line, Streatham conceded an intercepted pass which was jogged in for a converted try.
Five minutes later Grant was at it again, following a good scrum and a nice line by Cassemis saw him release Grant for another barn storming run down the left to score close to the posts. Again the kick missed. Minutes later Grant made another break and when closing in on the line, opted to pass to get the ball closer to the posts. The pass knocked on and the opportunity lost.
Streatham kept the pressure on but another opportunity just didn't appear. There were several good performances and Birchmore's return clearly made a difference, not that Thomason was actually having a bad game, far from it. Man of the Match went to Michael Parker who is starting to develop a habit of being in the right place at the right time, particularly on defence making a couple of really big significant tackles and turnovers just when they were needed.
In two weeks time Streatham travel to Battersea Park to take on London Media.
