Saturday saw this group of players finally start to show what they are really capable of. Having previously shown glimpses in long periods against Metropolitan Police and London Media, the challenge of taking on Old Georgians, one of the now promotion favorites was always going to be a demanding one.
All week the talk on the training paddock had been about controlling our 'red head', that period in the match when the panic sets in and our decision making goes awry. And yet, Streatham started the way we had left off against London Media, by not giving the easy passes and giving the harder ones. The result of which was an intercepted pass that got returned for a try in the first five minutes of the game.
And yet slowly the boys started to find their feet, without giving away and further cheap points, built on the strong defensive foundations that are fast becoming the hallmark of this team. Andrew McCall came into the fray to replace the injured Jack Peddle, who we hope isn't out for too long.
First some nice work by Man of the Match Anthony Matthews enabled winger Elvin Grant to break clear for a try which Ed Williams, newly promoted to first choice goalkicker, stepped up and converted the kick.
From the kick Kai Cassemis and Chris Geary combined neatly to break clear before an infringement by OG's saw Streatham awarded a penalty. The forwards called a catch and drive from the lineout, the result of which saw Michael James Parker drive over for the first score. The conversion missed.
With barely seconds on the clock, Stretham again showed endeavor from the kick off working the ball down the narrow side to give Grant another chance to run. Hauled down at the 22, Streatham managed to recycle the ball under pressure and Parker bagged his second try attacking through space to score under the posts. Williams knocked over the kick and Streatham went in at the half 19 points to 5 ahead.
The second half was a brutal affair between both teams which saw no fewer than 4 players removed from play for concussions (2 from either side). It also saw 2 converted tries a piece, the first from Second Row Damith Perera crashing over from a pick and go, and the second in response to a good OG's try, which saw Cassemis insist on remaining the club's leading points scorer by scoring the tries instead of the kicks.
The result gives the team some good momentum going into the big away game in two weeks time against Worth Old Boys, and if they can match this performance the chances are that the original result might just be overturned.
