This week has been frustrating for a raft of different reasons having said that the team performed well and narrowly missed out on winning the match. This week saw 8 backs and 4 forwards missing from the usual group of players selected, and this provided Jordan Staples and Theo Whyte the opportunity to come back into the team to show how they have developed. The week also saw the season debut of club stalwart Jamie Keating who was given the chance following a series of strong outings for the 2s. The injury list was compounded by the withdrawal of Chris Geary an hour before kick off, who unfortunately was just to ill to take the field.
That said the team got off to a flying start, a couple of quick recycles on the left hand side of the field then saw straight hands down the line to release Opeyemi Odelusi who was filling in on the wing. Ope made good ground beating several defenders before he very neatly demonstrated a very neat offload to set Liam Gallagher on the way for a breathtaking first try, which Ed Williams stepped up and slotted the conversion.
And then a 30 second period of madness ensued as first the restart wasn't caught and the bouncing ball fell nicely for WOBs second row to gather the ball on the charge in a calamitous affair, however the end result was Streatham led the game 7 points to 5 after less than 5 minutes of the game.
And then the referee all but killed the game with some bizarre calls and over officiating of the technical faults and completely ignoring the professional fouls that were occurring. What followed was a game that stopped every 20 - 30 seconds that prevented either team from finding any rhythm in the game. Apart from the odd breathtaking run from Theo Whyte, the first half became a damp squib with neither team really dominating the half.
The second half followed suit, WOBs managed to work a decent try which they converted before Gallagher ran a good line and broke free from 20 yards to dot down between the post for Streatham to regain the lead 14 points to 12. At which point Streatham threw their now customary big miss pass that gets intercepted for a try and the final 20 minutes saw a lot of endeavour from the side fighting to find a way to get back on top.
WOBs then scored a penalty, before on the 79th minute and close to the 10 metre line, Ed Williams stepped up to attempt Streatham's first ever penalty attempt of the season, which he duly succeeded in converting to give Streatham a losing bonus point which was the least they deserved from the result.
And now with all of the top four teams played Streatham now face the remaining 5 teams of the season in a bid to see just how high they can finish. First up next week will be Mitcham and with a large number of returning players Streatham will look to get their season back on track in front of a Home crowd.
