Streatham begin to show their potential

Mitcham put to the sword as Streatham start to show their real potential

Saturday brought the local derby against Mitcham and this week had brought another week of selection challenges for Streatham. With 6 normally first choice players away as well as injuries sustained by players Max Thomasson and Theo Whyte, meant once again the team were looking at how they would shape up. Tom O'Neil, James Andrews and Owen Howells all answering last minute calls to step up to the first team.

As it transpired Mitcham had their own challenges, by only being able to bring a 15 man squad with them and following a strong warm up Streatham opened the game on fire when from a lineout in the first couple of minutes of the game, saw Michael James Parker drive over for his now customary score.

A little wobble then ensued as the players realised they had an opportunity to really put in a score against Mitcham and they started to try things they don't practise. A quick chat by Captain Chris Geary, asking the players to go back to the simple things, saw in quick succession Opeyemi Odelusi score of a short crash ball, Russell Moorcock score from a very neatly read situation with Chris Geary, breaking from a scrum on the half way line and exchange a couple of passes between themselves and then Jake Doherty who scored in a break away where no less than 10 passes were made. And all of that brought the try bonus point on the 22nd minute of the game.

The first half ended a bit flat after the players lost the momentum briefly following a long stoppage when the Mitcham scrum half sustained a serious head injury.

Streatham started the second half the way the started the first, when another great break by Man of the Match Jordan Staples saw the final pass reach Jonny Korcz to charge over for a great first score. Both Korcz and Staples had big games and really gave Streatham a platform to compete, Staples really chasing everything and really showing signs of developing into a really strong winger.

Jake Doherty scored again 20 minutes into the second half and then in the final 10 minutes Streatham ran in 4 tries with Chris Geary with 2 tries and Vinny Auguiste with a sole try. The final try wiyth the last play of the game saw Streatham run the ball from a 5 metre scrum, which saw Jordan Staples receive the ball 3 yards behind his own try line in one corner and for the play to end in the opposite corner with Jake Doherty grabbing a well deserved hat-rick to close the game out. Tim Perry converted 5 of the tries but the players were keen to test his with the majority of the tries scored in the corners.

This week the team travel to bottom of the table strugglers Old Glynonians to see if we can build some momentum for the end of season charge to see if we can finish in fourth place. The league table is proving quite tight with every team between 8th place and 4th place separated by just 3 points. Streatham currently lie in 6th place and theoretically have most favourable fixtures to end the season with.
