The 3s played their first Merit Table fixture against South Godstone. We arrived with 11 players and they kindly lent us two (one who had never played before). We started 15 v 13 and rapidly lost players through injury (5 players eventually succumbed to injuries) - at one point we only had 9 players on the pitch. SGodstone were well drilled and just overran us with sheer weight of numbers. The effort and commitment of our players could not be faulted even though we had a very weak team but just not enough numbers.
There were outstanding contributions from Arnie Hunt, who played with a damaged hand and refused to go off, and Steve Tillin who belied his age and led from the front. Early injuries took away some of our stronger players and though we stuck at the task we didn't really have a chance.
We have to be positive and hopefully the players will use this as part of a learning curve. It would be great to play the opposition again with a normal and full 3rd team side but today victory was theirs.
