Streatham-Croydon ladies get the season under way with a solid win in their first league game of 2019/20.

A good chase from the kick off put Southampton under immediate pressure and Streatham were able to keep the visitors in their half. Good carrying from the forwards and threatening attack from the backs had Southampton on the back foot, and Streats managed to cross the try line through number 8 Alayna Hunte under the posts. This was ably converted by Coco Briden.

Streatham consistently put Southampton under pressure but a solid defensive set made it difficult to penetrate. A good attacking line from centre Kehinde Lawal at 12 brought the ball close to the line, but was kicked loose out of the ruck and was picked up by opportunistic Hunte who went over for her second. Conversion was good by Briden, bringing the score to 14-0.

Streatham then entered a substantial defensive period, and were under considerable pressure in the line out and the scrums, although scrum half Ken Maynard dealt with tricky ball very well. Southampton secured a turnover and break from Southampton winger threatened the try line, but it was nicely covered by full back Alicia Wyke and winger Charlie Uden, so by half time the score remained 14-0.

The SCRFC Ladies went in to the second half with renewed energy, with some huge carrying by Anna Fogel, making a big impact off the bench, and Franziska Metcalfe, who is new to the back row for Streatham this season. Amy Allen came on at 8, having spent Saturday playing Tag Rugby for Great Britain in the British and Irish Cup. She made an immediate impact, running a hard line off centre Helena Solomon to puncture the defence, step inside, and score under the posts. The conversion was good, bringing the score to 21-0.

With fresh legs on from the bench, Streatham continued to bring wave after wave of attack. Tactical kicking carried the team down the pitch well, and substitute centre Shannon Fane-Hervey broke the gain line, freeing her hands to pop the offload to fly half Millie Ross who went in under the posts, which wasn’t converted, bringing the full time score to 26-0.
